The Benefit of Speaking with Facilities

The breadth of the data collected in the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) is part of what makes it such a valuable source of data for policy makers and researchers. A portion of the selected Medicare beneficiaries reside in long-term care facilities. These beneficiaries are extremely important to the study because long-term care issues are at the forefront of the national health policy agenda. We work with these facilities and their administrators to collect information about selected beneficiaries that are residing in facilities, ensuring that the MCBS represents the life situations of all Medicare beneficiaries.

The Facility Interview

The facility interview focuses on the utilization and costs of the health care being received by the beneficiary, along with the characteristics of each facility. Much of the information can be abstracted directly from the resident’s chart and will only require a limited amount of the facility staff time. The cooperation of facilities with the MCBS does not violate Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. Moreover, residents’ Medicare benefits will not be affected in any way, regardless of the answers that facilities provide, or by whether or not the facility chooses to help us.

If you work at a facility that has been contacted to participate in the MCBS and you would like to learn more, please email the study at mcbs@norc.org, view the MCBS Facility Brochure, or call our toll-free line at 1-877-389-3429 to speak with MCBS staff.
